On February 15th (the 3rd Wednesday), we will feature photographer Jason Groupp, who has spent years working on something he’d been known for – in essence, creating his signature.  The result: The IHNY (I Heart NY) Sessions.  In this program, he shows you how he’s applied years of experience shooting for clients like Vogue, NY Times Magazine, J. Crew and Tiffany’s, to his work as a wedding and portrait photographer. Here he focuses on “million-dollar lighting” on a shoestring budget, how he markets his signature IHNY sessions and how he built a new revenue stream alongside his wedding work.

We will also feature the “Gadget Bag”, which is any tool, tip or idea that you use to make your day more pleasant or easier.  It can be a tripod extension, a slider, a new LED light, a way to hook a client or whatever!  Please bring the item(s) to the next meeting – but email VP Eric Model at emodel@reelmoments.com if you would like to present so he can schedule enough time for everyone who wants to present!   No matter how small or large your gadget is – someone else may not know about it and it can be worth all the time in the world to them.

Ron Bienstock, Esq. was our first guest speaker of 2012 on January 11th, with the subject of music copyright law.  This subject has been in the news lately and Ron filled us in on everything we need to know about using music with our videos.
Ron teaches Entertainment Law as an adjunct professor at New York University and is a frequent guest lecturer for various graduate and undergraduate schools at NYU. Ron has also been a music business commentator for NPR, WBAI, Barely Legal Radio, Tech TV and CNN. He has been a guest lecturer, instructor and panel moderator for BMI, ASCAP, CMJ, NEMO, SXSW, NAMM, PMA, RPMDA, the Florida Music Conference, Miami Music Conference, Atlantic Records’ A&R University, the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA), the New Jersey State Bar Association, The Benjamin Cardozo School of Law, St. John’s School of Law, Rutgers School of Law, Seton Hall Law School, Ithaca College, and many other organizations and universities.

Our September meeting will be held on the THIRD Wednesday this month, September 15th at our usual time and place, the Bella Casa Caterers.  We will be featuring our “Anything But Wedding Video” contest (see full contest rules below), as well as a “Show and Tell” segment, where you are encouraged to bring in and show off any gizmo or gadget that is new!

VOTING

* Voting will be on a ten point scale (1-10.)

* Any ballots with “see-saw” scoring (one entry with a “10″ and many others with a “1″ or “2″) will be discarded.

* Any ballots with missing scores will be discarded.  All entries must score at least a “1″.

* Entries with the three highest compiled scores will win Gold, Silver, and Bronze respectively.

COMPETITION RULES

* Entries are limited to a maximum length of five (5) minutes.  The program will be stopped after 5 minutes if longer.

* Entries must be submitted on DVD only.

* One entry per member per competition.

* All entries must be received by 7:30pm on the night of the competition.

* All entries must be given to the competition chairperson at the NJVA front desk.

* Entrant will not be allowed to vote in this competition.

* Entrant’s name must be on their ballot before handing it in, which serves the purpose of keeping their anonymity and not counting their ballot in the final score.

* Failure to hand in a ballot with your name on it will result in disqualification.

* Entrant must be a member in good standing of NJVA for at least one month prior to the competition in order to enter.

* Studio names and logo must not appear within the production.

* Studio personnel can only appear in the video incidentally.  It is left to the Competition Chairman and NJVA President to deem the appearance blatant.

Bill Kronemyer,  the founder of the NJVA, and one of the pioneers in the event video industry, died in his home on Thursday, August 5th.

Bill started the NJVA group back in 1988 by placing an ad in Videomaker magazine for interested videographers in the northern NJ area. The original four members met informally at Bill’s small apartment in Hawthorne, but soon moved to larger venues when the membership outgrew his apartment. The NJVA became an official non-profit organization in 1994, electing Robert Allen as their first president.

In that same year, Bill moved on to create the PVAA – Professional Videographers Association of America, and it’s monthly magazine, American Videographer. Bill served as both Executive Director, and the magazine’s publisher/editor. It was a slick, information-packed magazine, but only lasted about a year and a half.

Bill was also an active member with the northern NJ chapter of the ITVA (International Television Association), now the MCA-I (Media Communications Association, International), and served as their vice president from 1996 through 1999. He was known and respected for his considerable knowledge in the technical aspects of video production.

Bill owned and operated W.J. Kronemyer, Assoc., specializing in corporate clients; Sharp and Nordstrom, among them. For several years in the late 90′s, Bill was a full-time video editor for Christ Church in Montclair, NJ.
